Monitor The Exterior of Your Home or Business With A Outdoor Wireless Security Camera

What Are The Benefits of Security Cameras?

An outdoor wireless security camera is an excellent method for securing homes as well as businesses. The fact that this camera is wireless means that it can be installed virtually anywhere. The ease of installation is a major selling point over traditional surveillance cameras.

An outdoor wireless security camera allows a business owner to monitor activity on the perimeter of his or her place of business, the parking lot, and even down the street.

For homeowners, the added safety of monitoring what is occurring on the outside of their home, whether it is a child at play or someone at the door, makes it an option worthy of serious consideration.

Also, it has been documented that a criminal will avoid a house or business that is protected with a security camera.  If your home or business is burglarized, the odds of finding the culprit are greatly enhanced by having a camera installed.

Adding a security camera is an essential component of security systems.  They can be fitted with such features as night vision or infrared capabilities, and lens that can give them added capacity for monitoring the surrounding area of a home or business.

How Does Wireless Security Cameras Work?

An outdoor wireless security camera works by transmitting video by using video transmitters and receivers that are built into the housing of the camera.  Once a wireless security camera is operational, the video signal is sent via a frequency to the receiver, which is directly attached to a real-time security monitor, time-lapsed video recorder, TV, or computer.

There are several types of outdoor wireless security cameras; they are:
  • Bullet - These are compact cameras that are just a couple of inches long and are named after their "bullet" like housing.  Their size makes them excellent for covert surveillance.  The technology is similar to what you would find in larger cameras; however, they have micro parts to fit the size of the casing.
  • Dome - This outdoor wireless security camera is very durable and can be difficult to spot.  They are mounted on an exterior wall, vandal proof, and can withstand harsh weather. Dome cameras can be pointed in any has a 360-degree radius and the tinted shield keeps anyone from knowing where the lens is focused at any time.

  • C - Mount/Standard Body - This is the security camera that most people are familiar with.  It can be operated in exterior settings that would be outside the capability of the other cameras.  Encased in a housing with a built in heater and blower, they can also be fitted with various lenses that are sold separate.
  • Pan Tilt Zoom - PTZ cameras allows you to "look around" an area.  They are extremely agile permitting zooming in or out, and tilting up or down on a person, place or thing that is within sight of the camera. It can be operated manually or on automatic, and can focus on points for a pre-determined "dwell time."

Limitations To Wireless Security Cameras

As with other wireless devices, a wireless security camera is susceptible to interference from outside signals that can affect the security of the images.  Also, a battery operated wireless security camera is not appropriate for long-term surveillance because more power is required to transmit the signal compared to a wired system.  In addition, an outdoor wireless security camera is more likely to be stolen because of the fact that there are no wires to help secure them to the mounts.

Your choice of an outdoor wireless security camera will more than likely be made within the context of purchasing a security system for your home or business.   Understanding what your options are when choosing an outdoor wireless security camera as a vital component of that system will ensure that you make a selection that is right for your family or business.
